Carnival & Crafts in Bolivia & Peru with Nancy
Thomas
We fly into La Paz, Bolivia, arriving early on February 23rd.
Check into our charming hotel to rest and acclimate, then stroll
through the overflowing crafts and textile markets of the "Indian quarter." In
La Paz, we will visit fascinating museums-and interested people
may tour alpaca sweater workshops. Nancy and Cynthia will accompany you
to the markets and will explain the woven and knitted pieces. On the route
to Oruro, site of Carnival, we will visit Aymara villager friends on the
altiplano. In Oruro, before Carnival, we'll meet Carnival artists, see the
Anthropology Museum's collection of antique Carnival masks and see "Anata
Andina," the
indigenous folks' festival-then experience the safe and fabulous
CARNIVAL! We have excellent seats around the main plaza, perfect for viewing
and photographing the 45 different dance groups! Later, there is an optional,
included, guided day trip to the ancient site of Tiawanaku to see the megalithic
structures and new museum.
Then we fly to the charming city of Cuzco, Peru. We will experience
the incredible Inca sites of Machu Picchu and Sacsahuayman, and
we travel (in private mini-van) with renowned weaving expert,
Nilda Callañaupa, "behind-the-scenes" to learn
about the superb textiles and costume in several remote highland
communities. The villagers will demonstrate their textile techniques
for us and we will have lunch with Nilda's family in Chinchero.
Finally, we fly over the Andes to Lima, Peru's balmy capital,
for our last day. Fly home from Lima on March 11th.
